Traveling Fellowship Funds

 Overview
Information on traveling fellowships administered by CGS is provided in this section. Our traveling fellowships are awarded each year to Harvard students for an academic year of travel, study, and/or research abroad. Eligibility criteria and application procedures vary among the traveling fellowships. Detailed information about each fellowship can be accessed by scrolling through the listing below or using the "View by Fund Details" menu listed to the left.  Fund Details

AUSTRALIAN GRADUATE RESEARCH Scholarships

Australian Graduate Research Scholarships are awarded to Harvard doctoral students to support research and/or field work in Australia that relates directly to their doctoral thesis.

The scholarship has been established to support a full academic year (September to June) of research in Australia. Fellowship recipients are required to live at their research destination for the length of the academic year. This scholarship is not intended to support multiple trips to research destinations for students who are based in Cambridge or elsewhere in the United States during the year.

The fellowship provides a lump sum stipend that is paid to the recipient before he or she leaves the U.S. The funding maximum is currently $22,500.

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Study and Research Grants to Germany

An agreement between the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst or German Academic Exchange Service) and Harvard University provides Harvard graduating seniors, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows the opportunity to apply for the Study/Research Scholarships to Germany. It is designed for students who wish to study or do research in Germany between October 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010.

The Committee on General Scholarships will convene a special Selection Committee in early November to interview students for this competition. Interviews will take place in Cambridge in both English and German. A certain number of applications will then be forwarded to the DAAD New York office to be entered into a national competition. Those who are interested in applying for this grant are encouraged to review the information about applications, guidelines, and qualifications on the DAAD web site, www.daad.org. This information can also be obtained at the Committee on General Scholarships, at the Office of Career Services or through your Graduate School Fellowship Coordinator. Please note that the deadline dates on the DAAD web site do not necessarily reflect those for Harvard applicants.

Completed applications are due to the Committee on General Scholarships before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2008


ECOLE NORMALE SUPERIEURE Fellowships

An agreement between Harvard University and the Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) in Paris provides fellowships for Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students interested in studying at ENS for one academic year. The fellowship consists of admission to ENS (for which no separate application for admission is required), a room in an ENS dormitory, and a stipend of approximately $15,000 for living expenses. Applicants must be citizens of the U.S. Harvard graduate students must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time application is made. Undergraduate applicants must be members of the senior class who will graduate no later than June 2009. All applicants must have outstanding academic records and possess advanced French language skills. A special selection committee interviews finalists in French. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration directly to CGS. Harvard graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.


The HARLECH Scholarship

Alternating year to year, the Harlech Scholarship is awarded to a Harvard student for one academic year of study at New College, Oxford or to a graduate of New College, Oxford for one academic year of study at Harvard. Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students enrolled in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are eligible to apply for consideration. The scholarship awarded to the Harvard student consists of an assured place at New College, Oxford (for which no separate application for admission is required), payment of tuition and required fees at New College, a stipend forliving expenses,and round-trip airfare from Boston to London. The Harlech Scholarshipis not renewable. Harvard applicants must be citizens of the U.S. Only unmarried applicants are considered. Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students apply for consideration directly through CGS.

This scholarship will be open to an Oxford student for one academic year of study at Harvard University for the 2009-2010 academic year.


HARVARD-CHINA Scholarships

An agreement between Harvard University and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China provides Harvard undergraduate and graduate students, who are United States citizens, with the opportunity to study or conduct research in China for one academic year. The Ministry of Education arranges for the recipient's admission to one of approximately 80 Chinese universities that are approved to accept foreign students by the Ministry of Education and the China Scholarship Council. Five full scholarships (covering tuition and a stipend for living expenses) and ten partial scholarships (covering tuition only) are available each year. Harvard undergraduate and graduate students apply for consideration directly to CGS.

HARVARD-SCIENCES PO Exchange Fellowship

An agreement between Harvard and l'Institut d'Estudes Politiques de Paris ("Sciences Po") provides an opportunity for a student from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) to study at Sciences Po as an "Auditeur Libre" for an academic year. The study must be in one of the following fields: political science, sociology, economics, 20th century history, history of science or Soviet and East European studies. Tuition charges at Sciences Po are waived and the winner is paid a stipend of approximately $22,000 to support travel, living, and research expenses. Preference is given to citizens of the United States and graduate students must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time they apply for consideration. Graduate School of Arts and Sciences students apply for consideration through the Graduate School's Fellowship Coordinator.


Sinclair KENNEDY Traveling Fellowships

Sinclair Kennedy Traveling Fellowships are awarded to Harvard graduate students for one academic year of travel, study, and/or research outside the United States. The fellowship provides a lump sum stipend that is paid to the recipient before he or she leaves the U.S. (the stipend was $22,000 for academic year 2008-2009). The fellowship can be combined with other sources of funding subject to the approval of CGS. Graduate students interested in applying must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time of application. Applicants need not hold a Harvard degree. Preference is given to applicants with U.S. citizenship. Graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.


Frank KNOX Traveling Fellowships

Frank Knox Traveling Fellowships are awarded to Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students for one academic year of travel, study, and/or research in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. The Knox Traveling Fellowship provides a lump sumstipend that is paid to the recipient before he or she leaves the U.S. (the stipend was $22,000 for academic year 2008-2009). The fellowship can be combined with other sources of funding subject to the approval of CGS. Graduate students interested in applying must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time of application. Applicants need not hold a Harvard degree but must be U.S. citizens. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration through the Office of Career Services. Graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.


LUCE Scholarships

Each year, the Henry Luce Foundation invites Harvard University to nominate two or three candidates to its Luce Scholars Program, which provides 15 scholarships each year to students and alumni of selected U.S. universities. Luce Scholarships are not academic in nature but provide "Luce Scholars" with professional internships in Asia. Luce Scholars are an outstanding group of young Americans from fields unrelated to Asia or Asian affairs who would not otherwise have an opportunity for an intensive cultural experience in Asia during the course of their academic or professional careers. Applicants are deemed ineligible if they have professed career interest or academic focus in Asia or Asian affairs. Applicants are also deemed ineligible if they already have traveled significantly in Asia or have had other significant personal exposure to Asia.

The Luce Scholars competition is open to the following applicants: Harvard College seniors, recent graduates of Harvard College, Harvard graduate students, recent graduates of Harvard graduate or professional schools, and junior faculty of Harvard University. Applicants must be citizens of the U.S. who have not reached their 30th birthday by September 1st of the year they enter the program. Harvard College seniors and Harvard alumni and faculty apply for consideration directly through CGS. Graduate students must be nominated by the Dean of their graduate or professional school, or the Dean's designated representative.

Application materials for the 2009-2010 academic year can be requested by contacting the Committee on General Scholarships. Completed applications should be submitted to the Committee on General Scholarships before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2008. A selection committee will convene in mid-November to interview finalists.


Frederick SHELDON Traveling Fellowships

Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowships are awarded to Harvard graduate students for one academic year of travel, study, and/or research outside the United States. Although the intent of this fellowship program is to provide Harvard graduate students with the opportunity to spend an academic year abroad, applications from students interested in travel, study, or research within the United States are considered on a case-by-case basis. In no event are Sheldon Fellowships awarded to students who wish to study or conduct research at Harvard or in the greater Boston area. The Sheldon Fellowship provides a lump sum stipend that is paid to the recipient before departing for his or her intended destination (the stipend was $22,000 for academic year 2008-2009). The fellowship can be combined with other sources of funding subject to the approval of CGS. Graduate students must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time of application. Applicants must hold a Harvard degree or be a candidate for a Harvard degree in the year of application. Doctoral students with no prior Harvard degree may petition their departments to award them a Master's degree in order to comply with this requirement. Preference is given to applicants with U.S. citizenship. Graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.


Augustus Clifford TOWER Fellowships

Tower Fellowships are awarded to Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students for study at any university in France for one academic year. The fellowship provides a stipend of approximately $20,000 to support the expenses of one academic year of study at any university in France. Applicants must have graduated from Harvard College or will graduate from the College in the year that application for the fellowship is made. In addition, graduate students must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time application is made. All applicants must have outstanding academic records and possess advanced French language skills. A special selection committee interviews finalists in French. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration directly to CGS. Harvard graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's FellowshipCoordinator.

WILLIAMS-LODGE Scholarship to the Sorbonne

Members of the Harvard College Senior Class are eligible to apply for the Williams-Lodge Scholarship to the Sorbonne for one academic year of study. One scholarship is awarded per year to a Harvard College senior for study, after graduation from Harvard, in any school or department of the Universite de Paris, with a preference for the Sorbonne. The scholarship provides a stipend of approximately $20,000 to support the expenses of one academic year of study in any school or department of the Universite de Paris. All applicants must have outstanding academic records, interest in and commitment to humanities subjects and possess advanced French language skills. A special selection committee interviews finalists in French. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration directly through CGS.
