Traveling Fellowship Funds
Overview
Information on traveling fellowships administered by CGS is provided in this section. Our traveling fellowships are awarded each year to Harvard students for an academic year of travel, study, and/or research abroad. Eligibility criteria and application procedures vary among the traveling fellowships. ECOLE NORMALE SUPERIEURE Fellowships
An agreement between Harvard University and the Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) in Paris provides fellowships for Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students interested in studying at ENS for one academic year. The fellowship consists of admission to ENS (for which no separate application for admission is required), a room in an ENS dormitory, and a stipend for living expenses (the stipend was $14,000 for academic year 2003-2004). Applicants must be citizens of the U.S. Harvard graduate students must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time application is made. All applicants must have outstanding academic records and possess advanced French language skills. A special selection committee interviews finalists in French. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration directly to CGS. Harvard graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.
The HARLECH Scholarship
Alternating year to year, the Harlech Scholarship is awarded to a Harvard student for one academic year of study at New College, Oxford or to a graduate of New College, Oxford for one academic year of study at Harvard. Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students enrolled in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are eligible to apply for consideration. The scholarship awarded to the Harvard student consists of an assured place at New College, Oxford (for which no separate application for admission is required), payment of tuition and required fees at New College, a stipend for living expenses approximately $11,500 for academic year 2000-2001, and round-trip airfare from Boston to London. The Harlech Scholarship is not renewable. Harvard applicants must be citizens of the U.S. Only unmarried applicants are considered. HARVARD-CHINA Scholarships
An agreement between Harvard University and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China provides Harvard undergraduate and graduate students, who are United States citizens, with the opportunity to study or conduct research in China for one academic year. The Ministry of Education arranges for the recipient's admission to one of approximately 80 Chinese universities that are approved to accept foreign students by the Ministry of Education and the China Scholarship Council. Five full scholarships (covering tuition and a stipend for living expenses) and ten partial scholarships (covering tuition only) are available each year. Harvard undergraduate and graduate students apply for consideration directly to CGS.
HARVARD-SCIENCES PO Exchange Fellowship
The Harvard-Sciences Po Fellowship is awarded each year to a GSAS student for one academic year of study at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris. The year of study would be in one of the following fields: political science, sociology, economics, twentieth century history, history of science or Soviet and East European studies. Tuition charges at Science Po are waived and the winner is paid a stipend of 60,000 French francs (approximately $8,200 in 2001-2002) for living expenses. A special selection committee interviews finalists in French. Scholarship applications are made directly to the Committee on General Scholarships.
Sinclair KENNEDY Traveling Fellowships
Sinclair Kennedy Traveling Fellowships are awarded to Harvard graduate students for one academic year of travel, study, and/or research outside the United States. The fellowship provides a lump sum stipend that is paid to the recipient before he or she leaves the U.S. (the stipend was $14,000 for academic year 2003-2004). The fellowship can be combined with other sources of funding subject to the approval of CGS. Graduate students interested in applying must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time of application. Applicants need not hold a Harvard degree. Preference is given to applicants with U.S. citizenship. Graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.
Frank KNOX Traveling Fellowships
Frank Knox Traveling Fellowships are awarded to Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students for one academic year of travel, study, and/or research in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. The Knox Traveling Fellowship provides a lump sum stipend that is paid to the recipient before he or she leaves the U.S. (the stipend was $14,000 for academic year 2003-2004). The fellowship can be combined with other sources of funding subject to the approval of CGS. Graduate students interested in applying must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time of application. Applicants need not hold a Harvard degree but must be U.S. citizens. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration through the Office of Career Services. Graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.
LUCE Scholarships
Each year, the Henry Luce Foundation invites Harvard University to nominate two or three candidates to its Luce Scholars Program, which provides 18 scholarships each year to students and alumni of selected U.S. universities. Luce Scholarships are not academic in nature but provide "Luce Scholars" with professional internships in Asia. Luce Scholars are an outstanding group of young Americans from fields unrelated to Asia or Asian affairs who would not otherwise have an opportunity for an intensive cultural experience in Asia during the course of their academic or professional careers. Applicants are deemed ineligible if they have professed career interest or academic focus in Asia or Asian affairs. Applicants are also deemed ineligible if they already have traveled significantly in Asia or have had other significant personal exposure to Asia.
The Luce Scholars competition is open to the following applicants: Harvard College seniors, recent graduates of Harvard College, Harvard graduate students, recent graduates of Harvard graduate or professional schools, and junior faculty of Harvard University. Applicants must be citizens of the U.S. and no more than 29 years of age on September 1 of the year in which the tenure of the Luce Scholarship would begin. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration through the Office of Career Services. Harvard graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator. Harvard alumni and faculty apply for consideration directly through CGS.
Frederick SHELDON Traveling Fellowships
Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowships are awarded to Harvard graduate students for one academic year of travel, study, and/or research outside the United States. Although the intent of this fellowship program is to provide Harvard graduate students with the opportunity to spend an academic year abroad, applications from students interested in travel, study, or research within the United States are considered on a case-by-case basis. In no event are Sheldon Fellowships awarded to students who wish to study or conduct research at Harvard or in the greater Boston area. The Sheldon Fellowship provides a lump sum stipend that is paid to the recipient before departing for his or her intended destination (the stipend was $14,000 for academic year 2003-2004). The fellowship can be combined with other sources of funding subject to the approval of CGS. Graduate students must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time of application. Applicants must hold a Harvard degree or be a candidate for a Harvard degree in the year of application. Doctoral students with no prior Harvard degree may petition their departments to award them a Master's degree in order to comply with this requirement. Preference is given to applicants with U.S. citizenship. Graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.
Augustus Clifford TOWER Fellowships
Tower Fellowships are awarded to Harvard College seniors and Harvard graduate students for study at any university in France for one academic year. The fellowship consists of a lump sum stipend that is paid to the recipient before he or she departs for France (the stipend was $14,000 for academic year 2003-2004). Applicants must have graduated from Harvard College or will graduate from the College in the year that application for the fellowship is made. In addition, graduate students must have already completed one full year of graduate study at Harvard at the time application is made. All applicants must have outstanding academic records and possess advanced French language skills. A special selection committee interviews finalists in French. Harvard College seniors apply for consideration directly to CGS. Harvard graduate students apply for consideration through their graduate or professional school's Fellowship Coordinator.
WILLIAMS-LODGE Scholarship to the Sorbonne
The Williams-Lodge Scholarship is awarded yearly to a graduating senior at Harvard College for study at any school or department of the University of Paris, with a preference for the Sorbonne. The scholarship provides a stipend toward tuition, room and board, reasonable living expenses for the academic year at the University of Paris and one round-trip airfare from Boston to Paris. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding scholarship, character and athletic ability and have records that reflect an interest in and commitment to humanities subjects. Individuals must also have sufficient French language proficiency to undertake university-level course work in French. A special selection committee interviews finalists in French. Recipients must secure their own admission to the University of Paris, as well as any necessary arrangements for placement. Scholarship applications are made directly to the Committee on General Scholarships.
