Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQs)

Q: How do I apply for a scholarship from Harvard?

A: CGS administers a limited number of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students admitted to or currently attending the various schools of Harvard University. The majority of our scholarships are awarded through Harvard financial aid offices to students who have applied for financial aid from their schools. Students do not apply for these scholarships directly to CGS. Rather, financial aid offices must nominate students for CGS scholarships. You should therefore contact your Harvard financial aid office to inquire about CGS scholarships for which you may be eligible. Harvard College (undergraduates) and each of Harvard's graduate and professional schools also administer their own scholarship programs. Your Harvard financial aid office can provide you with additional information about school-specific scholarships for which you may be eligible.

Q: Does Harvard offer scholarships to international students?

A: Harvard College and Harvard's graduate and professional schools each have their own policies regarding financial aid to international students. Some of the schools offer scholarships and other forms of financial assistance to international students. Therefore, you should contact your Harvard financial aid office for further information about the availability of school-specific scholarships and other financial assistance for which you may be eligible. Apart from school-specific scholarships, CGS administers over 25 scholarship, fellowship, and loan programs for Harvard students from more than 20 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, England, France, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, and Spain. All of these programs are described in detail in Funds for International Students. In many cases, only prospective Harvard graduate students are eligible to apply and application must be made before the applicant enters the U.S. Eligibility criteria and application procedures vary. CGS works with local representatives in several of these countries who can provide additional information and assist in the application process.

Q: What is the typical amount of a CGS scholarship in U.S. dollars?

A: CGS scholarship amounts vary considerably. They range from as little as $500 to more than $40,000. The amount of each scholarship awarded by CGS is determined individually based upon several factors, including the amount of scholarship funds available each year, the number of students deemed eligible for each scholarship, and the financial need of each eligible candidate. A CGS scholarship rarely covers a student's full costs for an entire academic year.

Q: I am interested in studying at Harvard. How do I get information about admission requirements and scholarships?

A: Prospective undergraduate students should contact the Harvard College Admissions and Financial Aid Office. Prospective graduate students should contact the Admissions and Financial Aid Office of the particular Harvard graduate or professional school of interest to them. Contact information can be obtained through the main Harvard University web site at www.harvard.edu.
